OIL COOLER TEMPERATURE SENDER HOUSING

Oil temperature sender unit housing for checking oil temperature.

Fits into the oil cooler hose.(Not compatable with braided hoses) Fitted before the oil cooler will show maximum temperature reached. After the oil cooler it will tell you the all important temperature of the oil going to the engine bearings.

In the past, fitting an oil cooler was mandatory once an engine had been even slightly uprated. The main cause for this was the quality of motor oils available at that time. If the oil temperatures exceeded a specific point engine failure was almost guaranteed. Modern motor oils are generally of a much higher quality, especially the 'brand names', and have far superior high temperature tolerance than those of 10 or 15 years ago. Fully synthetic oils have extremely high heat tolerance. Use of any of these oils makes an oil cooler less of a necessity where engine outputs don't exceed about 90 horsepower. It is as bad to run the oil temperature too cool as it is to let it get too hot. The ideal operating range is 200(93c to 110c) to 230 degrees F (sump temp). At these temperatures the oil is working efficiently to produce the best power, economy and release of combustion by-products. If the oil is too cool, these by-products are absorbed into the oil, requiring more frequent changes to avoid bearing and bore damage. It is worth noting that keeping the oil at the correct temperature helps cool the engine; high oil temperatures will create higher water temperatures.

Various sizes of oil coolers and fitting kits, including pipes, are available. To help control temperature there is a thermostat MOCOT1 that fits into the engine cooler pipes (can not be used with braided steel pipes) that operates at 74degrees C (165degrees F). Not compatible with the braided steel pipes. 5/8"UNF thread for the sender unit.







Must use TE5 adaptor with capilary bulbs and sensors that require a sealing seat.

Lubrication - Oil, what it does and how


It's criminal. Folk spend fortunes putting together super-sonic motors, only to skimp on the oil they use. Why? Oil's oil right? Wrong. Even if it's a standard engine, it deserves TLC considering it's extremely hostile working environment.

Oil is literally the engine's life-blood. The opening few sentences are astonishingly true. Oil isn't there just to prevent all metal components within an engine fusing together in the first few seconds of running, creating a total melt down of Chernobyl proportions. It's an intricate blending of chemicals to protect the engine as a whole.

The most commonly uttered statement about engine wear is most wear occurs within the first 10 minutes from start up when cold. True if cheap chip fat oil is used.In performance and race engines, a considerable amount of wear is created by heat, load, speed, and pressure. Again, cheapy oil won't give protection here.

Lubrication - Temperature critical


The correct running temperature of the oil is perhaps even more important than the water/coolant temperatures - so let us consider how to control them.

Mainly because it seems to be the most misunderstood of the whole process, and oil cooler fitment almost a reflex when over-heating occurs where a tuned engine of any type is concerned. And in many cases on standard production road cars for that matter.

Almost since the appearance of the immortal Cooper S, fitting an oil cooler has been the essential thing to do to any tuned Mini without any comprehension why. The original fitment was necessary because oil and bearing technology wasn't too advanced. Asking an oil of yester-year to cope with lubricating an engine at racing speeds, and a gearbox pushed their performance to the edge of their all too narrow capability, so extreme control over their working environment was essential for reliability. Hence oil cooler fitment.
